The Conservative talkers have been all a clatter this weekend aboot President Obama’s plans to journey to Martha’s Vineyard (which is not a vineyard and we don’t know who Martha is… if you do, please comment) for a week long vacation. They’ve pointed out that Obama is deserting his post in the midst of an epic health care crisis, and he should stay and solve things instead of golf with Tiger Woods.
I actually think that the Obama-cation is a good thing – on a human level and a practical national health (as in ‘health of the nation’ and not ‘national health care’) type of one.
Barack Obama is a human being, as such – he gets tired. He grows weary! At such junctures it behooves human beings to go off somewhere and rest. Additionally, the demands and requirements of one’s employment can combine to increase the weariness. I would imagine that being President would probably be at the top of any list compiled of weariness-inflicting gigs. And Obama has been a particularly busy bee even as President’s go. The man has managed to increase our projected 10 year deficit to just over 9 trillion dollars! That has to be stressful.
Ok, that was kinda cheap… well definitely not ‘cheap’ if you follow me but possibly unfair… No, I guess it’s fair too!
But back to the vacation… The President has been hard at work. It requires a lot of intestinal fortitude and energy to do his job and he needs a break. To the point many Conservatives have made about this being the apex of the health care debate – you really can’t find too many weeks where a President doesn’t have some earth shattering event hanging over his head. Kinda the nature of the ‘leader of the free world’ beast.
And another practical reason why this is a good thing - from a national political standpoint, every moment that President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Dingy Harry Reid (thanks Rush) are at the reins of political power on the Potomac is one more moment for people to see that beautiful campaign promises bolstered by poor ideologies are a great quantity of fuzzy ineffectiveness.
This week will be 7 more days of chances for Americans to see that the economics of hope and change are failing. But without the President at his desk to sign any new spending into law – we can sit back and watch the show with a bit more relaxation. Safe travels, Mr. President!
