I for one am not interested in voting for a president based on their knowledge of current events, culture, history or science. Though a well rounded candidate should have understanding of these areas, I am most interested in a candidate’s judgment and wisdom. It is typical for people to become distracted by gaffes that people in the spotlight make, but I do not care if the President cannot say "corpsman," doesn't know where Hawaii is, and occasionally creates new words, if he excercises sound judgement and moral constraint.

I judge a candidate on their moral soundness, leadership, and wisdom. With this solid base, they will surround themselves with knowledgeable advisors and can make the critical decisions about the future of this country.

Marshall!

I respect your (admittedly) coveted endorsement and its recipient! Cain is an articulate and memorable creature.

I do (unsurprisingly?!) quibble with your contention as to specifics. Cain himself admitted the complexity & depth of Mitt's econ plan last eve when he used his question to ask him whether it was simple enough (?!) & whether he could recite its 59 points! And Romney with the great retort about simple solutions being delightful but often insufficient to big problems. Fact is - Romney has the most detailed economic plan, health care plan (the only one of the candidates WITH one in fact), and foreign policy outlook.

Cain has 9-9-9 and... ...witticisms.

After watching the debate last night and watching an amazing meteoric rise in the polls, I have decided to put MY endorsement (which is very coveted by the way) behind Herman Cain. I am more and more convinced Mitt Romney doesn't have what it will take to truly make a difference, and Herman Cain, if he wins the nomination and eventually the presidency, will have enormous political capital for his "9-9-9" tax plan. Even if 9-9-9 isn't eventually implemented, Herman Cain has proven that he has the stones to actually provide a specific solution in a campaign which is completely foreign to Mitt and Perry and Michelle. They are more than willing to provide general statements that fit with what they believe people want to hear, but I don't think people want to hear that anymore.

I, like most Americans, want to hear specifically what a candidate is going to do, how they are going to do it, and why. Herman Cain answered those questions, and also Newt Gingerich and Ron Paul. Cain may not be as refined as the Romneys of the world (yes, we have plenty of Romneys...why elect another one?) but he speaks his mind and has a background anyone can respect.

[...] In “Iron Man,” on the other hand, you had a wink and a nod, almost an ironic treatment of the genre that tried, very hard and very successfully, to be above all the nerdy talk about continuity and purity and just be cool, while simultaneously recognizing that maybe comics themselves are a little silly. Among the practitioners of this method are “Kick A–” and, of course, “Iron Man 2.” The point is that both of these methods of making a comic book movie, while certainly valid ways of doing it, leave out another option: making a comic book movie that actually, lovingly, embraces its roots. It sounds so simple. After all, comics have been around for decades and have a rich storytelling history. But the paradox of the modern comic book movie is that while they’re raking in more money than they ever have, comic books themselves are looked down on in many circles as a juvenile pastime accessible only by ultra-geeks and manchildren. That’s not true, really, but that’s the perception. “Green Lantern” is filmmaking via that third option. It loves that it has this strange, otherworldly origin, and it plays it up for all it’s worth. Nowhere is there any kind of attempt to make Hal’s ring constructs look gritty or down-to-earth, and nowhere is there any kind of nudging reference to how silly this all is (well, there is one comment about Hal’s mask, but I’ll let that slide because it’s hilarious). At one point, Hal makes his ring project two fighter jets that pull him about in some sort of stellar harness, and it’s just there, without any kind of self-consciousness. There’s just this sense of joy to all of the proceedings, this sense that the only thing the filmmakers were thinking was “This is so cool!” and apparently one of the only people agreeing with them was me. It does help that I’ve read the comics, and I know that Green Lantern readers have responded much more positively to the movie that much of the rest of the public. I can honestly say that “Green Lantern” is one of the most true-to-the-source adaptations I’ve seen of one kind of a medium to another, and it’s exhilarating to watch the things you’ve seen on a comic book page come to life, exactly (or almost so) as you know they are supposed to be. But I think the appeal can go beyond that. As the film was being prepared, DC higher-ups were touting it as a “Star Wars”-style epic, and while that is definitely something of an overreach, I understand the core concept of what they were trying to say. This is a tale that is heavy on mythology but also pretty accessible, with a pretty solid story of good vs. evil woven in among the flashy special effects and character beats. Ryan Reynolds was a solid choice for Hal, more so than I thought he would be, and he helps ground the movie (in a positive sense, that is) when things start getting a little extraterrestrial. But above all, it’s just fun. It’s a sound and light show, with some decent jokes and a foundation that can spawn an overarching story, if DC greenlights the obviously expected sequel (an action DC may or may not take, now that the reactions are in). As I said, it’s not a perfect story, but if you drop your pretensions and let yourself go, you might just get swept away. If you missed the opening, go see it this weekend. To paraphrase the tagline of another famous DC superhero, “You’ll believe a man can fly… and create glowing green constructs via a mystical power ring and the strength of his own will.” It sounded catchier in my head.

[...] GooseRadio.com: “Dawn Treader Sails a Steady & Worthwhile Tack” The deviation from the text is a big part of the film, and on the whole I actually liked what they did. The Dawn Treader was my least favorite of the books – I think due somewhat to the episodic nature of the story. It was almost more akin to a TV series with a separate episode being devoted to each island visit than an intertwined and cohesive story. The movie presents a unified yarn with a common theme, a common enemy, and in the end delivers a better payoff because of it. Whereas the plot deviations in Prince Caspian seemed totally out of step and forced, those in Dawn Treader stay within the spirit of the story and enhance the movie. . . . [...]

Just because you were born a Dolphin's doesn't mean you can't renounce it and move to the Dark Purple Side. I was born in Wisconsin, but I was able to renounce Packerhood. Even Obama renounced his Muslim faith, or so it's been reported. Or, maybe you can be a Christian and Muslim in Washington's eyes.

I think the entire video puts Palin in a bad light. The sarcastic snark when she squeals, " Oh! So you WANTED me to be your governor. I'm HONORED" made her sound like she had morphed in to a 12 year old squaring off in a playground.

The eye rollery was simply obnoxious. Can you imagine the heads that would have exploded if ANYone in the Obama admin was caught on tape reacting that way ?

The hooded daughter interrupting the conversation and speaking to an adult Alaskan voter with sarcasm and haughtiness while Palin happily allows it shows a very strange family dynamic. As does Todd acting as a cross between secret service and bar bouncer.

Add to that the points you make and we have a snapshot of the true Sarah Palin and it is not a flattering one. She may be around for awhile longer but her star is fading. If she makes a run in 2012 it will be for no other reason than to have fodder for another book and to keep the speech $$ coming in. There's no way she's a viable option anymore.

A sad, but true fact. However, I'm of the opinion that they're hiring women who look like fashion models because they're missing how beautiful these women can be in other ways. This means that in the end, they end up losing a lot because they can't see that.

Someone mentioned earlier that Cole is so great because he knows that sports aren’t that important and he treats them that way (I’m paraphrasing). Problem with that argument is, KFAN is “supposed” to be a sports station. Logic would indicate that if a person wanted sports talk, he’d go to KFAN. If he wanted to hear someone prattle on
about things OTHER than sports, he wouldn’t go to a sport station. Right? Now I’m not saying there isn’t room for Dan Cole on Twin Cities radio, but put “sports talkers” on the sport station and Dan on another
“Entertainment” station.

You make a valid point here. In the end it's all just about personal tastes. You will never enjoy listening to the Common Man, and I will be upset with KFAN if they fire him. There is really no "truth" either way.

I enjoy it when "rubes" dismiss people who don"t like Dan Cole's radio show by saying "you just don't get it." As if people who DO like it are in on some sort of "cosmic joke" that no one else could possibly understand and because they claim to "get it," they are in some sort of "special fraternity."
The bad new is, there's nothing to get. Except the fact that "The Common Man" has the best radio gig in the Twin Cities! Who wouldn't love being able to put in 3 hours a day talking about ... nothing. Too bad the program director has to mess things up by bringing Mark Rosen on to actually talk sports once in a while.

I've missed you. (Hugs) Glad James cleared up the oil spill issue. I thought for sure it was W's fault but now I find out it was Rush. Of course, this makes perfect sense to me now. The drugs and all.
Keep splattering your mirror with tooth paste. No worries. They say it makes the glass shinny and we all like the shinny things. Do hope Sioux Falls knows how lucky they are to have you!

KFAN's morning show is generally unlistenable, and Paul Allen desperately needs a new sidekick to fill the void left by the snowblower Jeff Dubay, but clearly you don't "get it" when it comes to Common. The whole point of Common's show is that people take sports way too seriously and there is a lighter side to sports. His views toward the local team are generally negative, yes, but given that the Twins' 2 WS titles are the only championships in Minnesota professional sports history, can you really say his commentary is inaccurate?

As for this point you made:

"Your teachers mention to you that it is, at times, a positive thing to sound as though you enjoy your job and have a fairly upbeat demeanor about what you’re discussing and… life in general."

I cannot imagine somebody who fits this description more than Paul Allen. Say what you want about the morons on the morning show, but I think it's clear they enjoy their job as well.

Dan Barreiro is a true professional. When I've been listening to KFAN at work all day, I find his sojourns into the political realm a welcome departure from further discussion of the topics that have been beaten like a dead horse in the shows that precede him. Also, he is able to book A-list guests from the sports world and otherwise that make his show a must-listen. You may disagree with his stances on certain issues, but he is usually at least willing to listen to other viewpoints. If you don't like inaccurate/spun/one-sided information, why do you enjoy Limbaugh? Rush is an outstanding broadcaster, but just because he says he is right doesn't make it so.

KFAN is not perfect, but I will never switch the the ugly stepsister that is KSTP.

P.S. If you want to remember how to spell Barreiro's name, it's I before E except after C and in Barreiro. I noticed you misspelled his name throughout this diatribe.

I always tend to mull over things a little bit harder about all sorts of stuff right after I browse over someone new's web site and their particular opinions. I'm really grateful for the invention of the blog in addition to how it has changed the internet into a substantial variety of shared views. I ended up on here after researching some of my work stuff on Bing and somehow stumbled on your blog. It is always good times browsing through and I do hope you keep things up. Thanks again!

"Just think about that. You could dwell – palatially – in a structure that was created from something that grew out of the beautiful black sod of God’s country."

Most people do that. In houses. Made of wood.

Goose, I don't think you have the right to be the representative of South Dakota; you've lived there less than two years. You're still in the honeymoon stage of habitation, looking through dim rose colored glasses.

I would like to move that the witness's testimony be dismissed.

Thank you so much for writing this. I've been thinking this same thing for quite a while. It is odd, isn't it?

Oh and the French joined up with us for three reasons
1) to mess with the British
2) Benjamin Franklin
3) Lafayette (who is a fascinating person, by the way)

There is no overlap between the New Atheism and Post-Modernism. The New Atheists all agree that the is some objective reality and the way to learn about it is empirical evidence. They do not accept the Post-Modernist idea that truths are cultural constructs and one culture is as good as another. Religion fits in easily with Post-Modernism as just another "cultural truth". On the other hand the New Atheists want to subject religion to the same critical standards as scientific theories. It's not that they think whether the Earth is flat or round is a cultural issue; it's that religion is like believing the Earth is flat on faith.

In addition to ousting from office every single incumbent on this list come November, We the People should deport their collective anti American asses to the Socialist or Communist country of their choice where they can joyfully resume their practice of appeasing a dictator who rules by fiat and decree. (executive order, coerrsion, backroom dealing etc.) Once again, the Moonbats in our employ have ignored the loudly and clearly stated will of the People. The People can no longer ingnore their insubordination, unless we cozy to the eventuallity of addressing one another as commrade.

A health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, signed by a President who also hasn't read it and smokes, administered by a Treasury Chief who didn't pay his taxes, overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke. What could possibly go wrong?
