Hang with me here, you see, once I’ve listened to an album and a “high” has been achieved, I move on to another band/album/genre looking for a similar, nay, greater rush of emotion and enlightenment. Thus far, 2009 has had a pretty low occurrence of highs. So, it was a welcome and pleasant surprise to happen upon the debut from fun., Aim and Ignite. For the uninitiated, fun. is the new project from Nate Ruess, formerly of The Format, a painfully underrated emopop act that transformed itself into an eclectic pop band on their second, and final release, Dog Problems.

Colbie Caillat – Breakthrough – August 25

Miss Caillat’s lead single “Fallin’ For You” implies that her sophomore effort won’t stray far from the laid back, lovey-dovey tunes that made her debut album a platinum-selling success, but that’s not a bad thing, as her disarming personality shines through to give the songs a sincerity where others would be saccharine.

Brand New Daisy Album CoverBrand New – Daisy – September 22

If ever there was a band that deserved the title of brooding, its Brand New, and the early word from frontman, Jesse Lacey, is that the sound on this record will bring back memories of their debut, Your Favorite Weapon. However, lyrically, it looks like Daisy will continue down the path of 2006’s, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, which means they’ll be dark and brooding.

Since news first started circulating of this 'Twitter' thing, many of us were perplexed to hear that the word stood for more than just ambiguous bird noises. However, since humanity has since begun flocking (yay for puns) to this new service, we here at the big GR felt that if you were going to be tweeting - you should also be able to access and experience a general sense of well being while doing so. Therefore, GooseRadio has set up shop at Twitter.com. Find our page on the service here... and follow us @gooseradio.

Twitter LogoAs soon as a new piece or podcast appears on GooseRadio, folks on Twitter will be the first to know about the new content and will be one short click away from taking it in via their computer screen or mobile device. Another aspect of the coolness - our contributors will each be sharing ("tweeting") stories from the worlds of politics, sport and culture that they believe will bring you entertainment, information, and a general sense of well being on a daily basis.

So follow us on Twitter! We would be joyful, you would be joyful... so much mirth!

A few nights ago, I caught comedian Sean Mauss at the Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis. As with most comedians, he was profane, crude and sarcastic. Throughout his act, there was an underlying current of self-deprecation and self-destructive behavior that manifest itself in jokes about being an alcoholic and came to a particularly transparent climax in a joke that ended with, “I’m dying on the inside.” Of course, the comment was swathed in sarcasm, and the audience ate it up as they laughed and applauded, but the sadness and hopelessness was undeniable.

Sandler and RoganThis type of sadness is the foundation for Funny People, a comedy with moments of drama (is it okay to use the word “dramedy?”), directed by the behind-the-scenes king of comedy, Judd Apatow, whose works, despite their rough language and lurid subject matter, always seem to have a softer, more human side lurking beneath the fart jokes.

“Intentionally inorganic” is the phrase Derek Webb uses to describe his latest effort, Stockholm Syndrome, and while his signature acoustic sound may have been replaced with electro-beats and computer-synthesized bells and whistles, the allure of Webb, with his bold, often shocking statements, is still firmly in place.

In fact, its one shocking statement in particular that seems to be making this Webb’s most intriguing and controversial offering to date, but more on that in a moment. Overall, Stockholm Syndrome doesn’t veer far from Derek’s usual topics de jour of social justice and liberty in the Spirit, and perhaps the most moving moment on the record occurs during “The Proverbial Gun”, an analogous tale of a murderer being set free despite his crimes, in which he strains his voice to sing the word “free” over and over.

The beginning announcement - The President has pulled our economy back from the brink! From the brink of 8% unemployment to the brink of 10% employment! This man went to Harvard!

We have taken funds from people who have been too successful. How dare those buzzards. 7:04 - His eyes look very moist. I wonder if Joe Biden said something emotionally taxing.
