The state of our starting pitching is first up. Ryan noted earlier this spring that he thought the Twins’ needed to do more to address their pitching needs in the offseason, but what does he think now that Francisco Liriano has rediscovered some magic and Carl Pavano is pitching like Greg Maddux.
We talk Jim Thome and the affect his presence has in adding a heretofore unheard of dimension and depth to the Twins’ lineup. Ryan gives his take on how close the Detroit Tigers might follow Minnesota in the standings this year. Entertainment, Information & a General Sense of Well Being await!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>GooseRadio’s David Gregory, the Emperor of Fargo, joins me to talk MLB baseball in 2010.
Target Field’s awesome-ness is praised. Gregory speaks of The Minnesota Twins signing of Joe Mauer and it’s necessity. He also takes a gander at Mauer’s future production, Francisco Liriano’s promise possibly being fulfilled, and what one piece the Twins might need to carry them to a World Series.
General thoughts on the MLB 2010 season are explored. David says this year is just like the Oklahoma Land Grab, with a bit more parity between teams. He doesn’t miss the opportunity to knock on the New York Yankees, however, and points out the different outlook teams like the Twins have to have to compete with the Evil Empire.
The Atlanta Braves are touched on. Jason Heyward is really something, and kind of a pleasantly unusual story for baseball. Does Atlanta have what it takes to give the Phillies a run for their money in Bobby Cox’s last season?
And lastly, can anyone get past the Yankees for the World Championship?

Well, I just saw an image that looks completely different to me than the photoshopped versions that have existed for months – a photo of Brett Favre in Vikings gear.

Brett Favre Vikings CampAnd, just like those other examples, something feels a little off.

Three weeks after declaring that he couldn't convince his body to undergo the strain of another full season (and three weeks after I compared him to Meg Ryan on this site), Favre has signed on to be the Minnesota Vikings quarterback. Just hours after getting off the team's personal jet in St. Paul, Favre was taking snaps at practice, getting ready to start in Friday's exhibition against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Montreal Expos never did win the World Series.

The 'Spos had the best record in Major League Baseball on August 12, 1994 and were primed to take their talented, small-market approach deep into the playoffs. In 2009, the Expos are now named the Nationals, residing in Washington D.C. and occupying the dregs of the National League East.

Standings aren't the only thing that has changed in the 15 years since the MLB Players Association staged a strike that cancelled the '94 postseason. Steroid use became the story of the new millennium, and big-budget clubs dominated the postseason. With such a dynamic shift in the fabric of the game since the strike, it begs the question, was 1994 the baseball tipping point from national pasttime to third-tier American sport? The strike of '94 was hardly the first time the MLB had ground to a halt: eight stoppages had occurred since 1972. Long-standing distrust between the players and the owners led to a widening gap between expectations, with Commissioner Bud Selig wanting a salary cap and MLBPA executive director Donald Fehr hearing nothing of the sort.

Happy Trade deadline day Twins fans; Goose asked me to consider a guest shot or two on his blog and it felt like now was as good a time as any. The trade deadline has come and gone, and up until about an hour ago it looked like the Twins were going to do their usual stand pat routine and then spend the next few days spinning the “we have to think about the future”; or “we aren’t going to do anything that doesn’t make sense for the ballclub” party line.

Twins GM Bill SmithBut that all changed when GM Billy Smith pulled the trigger on the Orlando Cabrera trade that, apparently (if you read LaVelle Neal), many Twins players were lobbying for as recently as last week when the Twins were playing against Cabrera in Oakland.

Before I do a little Bill Simmonsesque breakdown of the trade, here are a few thoughts about this Twins team.

Brett Favre has decided to remain retired, eschewing a chance to start for the Minnesota Vikings in favor of filming Wrangler jean commercials. The former Green Bay Packer star had led Minnesota on in the fashion of a junior-high dalliance (does Brad Childress like me in his offensive set? Check yes or no), but ultimately returned to the solitude of Mississippi tractors and the memory of Mary.

Brett Favre The Star Tribune first reported that Favre contacted the Vikings on Tuesday – he will continue his now one-year-plus retirement that has had fits and jumps (Lambeau leaps?) since he tearfully said goodbye after the 2007 season to a state of mourning cheeseheads.

Since he wet that Wisconsin podium, he has played a full season with the New York Jets.

George W. Bush made an appearance! President Bush looked 10 years younger than when last we saw him in office... and he seemed happy! Probably has a lot to do with the fusion of two things Bush loves - baseball and freedom from fire breathing dragons reporters like Helen Thomas.

Ok - National Anthem time. Look at the size of that flag! Sheryl Crow was a little flat there on a couple of notes... she was married to Lance Armstrong once! French people really don't seem to like Lance very much... oooohhhh PLANES! I think that was a stealth. That's tremendous.

We often need those thoughts of sunshine and yesteryear as life can be an old horse at times. But baseball too can be a fickle mistress*. Every once in a while, your favorite baseball team will pull in your attention, energy, and passion like some inexorable vacuum. Then, with little or no warning, their success will run its course. They will fall in defeat. You will sit in in front of your television, by your radio, or in your stadium of choice with a glazed expression of mournful disbelief. You will attempt to remind yourself that you are working yourself up over men hitting knit orbs with sticks, but logic will fail to drown out the emotion.

While many of the idealists among us believed that President Obama's campaign promises to change the tone in Washington and bring people together through heightened understanding and tolerance were legitimate, it's clear now from his attitude that we can instead expect the 'It was the other guy' thing. Actually, with a slight twist... President Obama will publicly cleave to the high-minded rhetoric that he's tackling a great challenge, and THEN place all the blame for the challenge on someone else. So there's an extra step there (the venerable Charles Krauthammer has an epic piece just out on this very thing just out as well... particularly with how it relates to George W. Nothing like a little 9th inning heroics to get the juices cooking! That is a Dale Brickma (played by Daniel Stern in Rookie of the Year) reference for those of you keeping score at home. Mr. Casilla turned a disappointing (although hardly weep-worthy) evening into a rallying point for the ball club when he popped a single up the middle and scored two runs. Bert Be-Home-Blyleven had the presence of mind to mention that Alexi was the one responsible for plating the go ahead run in the greatest game ever played! That, I submit, was last August 25th when the Twins came back from being down big with an innane rally culminating in a blown save by the corpulent Robert Jenks of the hated Pale Stockings.

Sadly, we took the loss against the Mariners, but reading this moment by moment commentary will console you because I am so delightfully witty. We pick things up in the 3rd, with the Twins down 1 to 0 to Seattle.

8:05 - Good gravy in the morning. Adrain Beltre has a potent arm. He has thrown out the youthful Casilla on a difficult play far to his left.

8:08 - He (Beltre), also appears to have very hard knees. The youthful Punto strayed off third and the Mariners catcher threw behind him. Punto attempted to flee back to the plate and was harpooned by Beltre's knee. Beltre appeared genuinely concerned for the small man. Everyone is OK.

I have been one calm Conservative dude for the weeks since the coronation of His Most Augustine Grace, Barack Obama, as President of these United States. Through each truckload of these 4 trillion dollars he has loosed from the federal treasury, I have forestalled the perennial urge to stand up and yell. A cry to the effect of, "Holy biscuits and gravy man! You are driving this country into massive debt! How can you have any sincere belief we can spend our way out of recession when you can't point one place it's worked before! GAH!!! But the knowledge that we Conservatives bear so much responsibility for putting Obama into his vanilla abode has staunched my angst. Until today.

This World Baseball Classic is happening right now. I've been able to catch much of three games over the weekend, and was really impressed. More so than in 2006 (when the first event was held), this thing really seems to have some excitement and competitive fire from the teams and appears to be gaining traction from the fans.

Even though the very mention of baseball conjures up images of Americana for most, the WBC offers a fascinating (almost surreal) confirmation that places like Japan and the Caribbean have taken our national pastime and made it their own. And while baseball has been supplanted in many ways by the more ADD friendly NFL football, people in those countries absolutely glory in the game of baseball. And that IS great to behold.
