This would be really funny if he didn’t have so many thoroughly good people who look up to him and respect what he says.
Rob Bell has come out for gay marriage. Humorously, this news breaks on the same day as Hillary Clinton’s reversal on the issue. Maybe it’s not as funny as I think it is. It’s late. Anyway. Here’s the money quote…
“I am for marriage. I am for fidelity. I am for love, whether it’s a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, a man and a man,” Bell said. “And I think the ship has sailed. This is the world we are living in and we need to affirm people wherever they are.”
Just take a second and soak that last sentence in. Profound! So much about progressive thinking can be understood in that one turn of phrase. It’s not about acceptance… not about tolerance. It’s never been about equality. It’s about affirmation. ‘Tell me I’m right.’ ‘Tell me I’m not wrong.’
And this is what in the long term will be the most unfortunate part of the gay marriage debate. You see it already. If you believe gay marriage is, in fact, wrong — it’s not enough to simply treat gay folks well. It’s not enough to hang out with them… to show love to them. If you think they’re wrong – thou art a bigot.
But back to Rob Bell. I appreciate that, at this point anyway, he’s not even trying to claim this has anything to do with the Bible. He’s now just winging the composition of his beliefs according to what makes sense in his head.
