The American muse that was Yogi Berra passed from this life into the next last evening at the ripe old age of 90. There aren’t too many people who really deserve to be called icons, but here was one.
Berra was a Hall of Fame baseball player who came to the sport in it’s golden age & won three MVPs and ten World Series with The New York Yankees.
The catcher is acknowledged to be the wellspring for the name of America’s favorite cartoon bear. Yet it was his penchant for uttering impossibly profound things that really got people’s attention.
Truth bombs like, “It ain’t over till it’s over” were hurled by Mr. Berra with such frequency and precision that they became legend. Legend became myth, and myth became codified in Aflac commercials.
In honor of the passing of this noble character, here are ten times that Yogi Berra nailed this thing we call life with his Yogi-isms.
#10 – “A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.”
Inflation. It affects us all.
#9 – “You wouldn’t have won if we’d beaten you.”
#8 – “I never said most of the things I said.”
#7 – “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going – because you might not get there.”
#6 – “Even Napoleon had his Watergate.”
#5 – “You can observe a lot just by watching.”
#4 – “It’s tough to make predictions. Especially about the future.”
#3 – “We made too many wrong mistakes.”
I’m willing to bet that G.O.B. Bluth built his life off of this one.
#2 – “It gets late early out there.”
#1 – “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
An irascible sentiment!
